We used to get all kinds
of nice things from the prisoners. They used to send me gifts. Gene
would bring home all kinds of beautiful flowers–they would
raise flowers; they had a greenhouse. They had prisoners that worked
in carpentry. They had prisoners that were artists. Some of them
were able to do their own thing that way. I’ve got some paintings
that one prisoner made for me. I paid a carton of cigarettes for
each painting. And we also had a coffee table and a little hexagon
end table.
