Library Research Exercise: English Grammar, Style & Usage

Use the research guide to access appropriate tools and resources.

1. Explore the Stewart Library catalog.

  • Use keywords to find a book relating to this class.  
    • List the keywords you used:
    • Give the author, title and call number of the book you found.  (Give URL for electronic source)





  • Look at the subject headings in the left column.  Click on one  (If none seems right or you just find the same book, use a different subject heading from the class guide.)
    • List the complete subject heading you chose. (Include punctuation)
    • Give the author, title and call number of the second book you found.  (Give URL for electronic source)

 

 

 

2. Explore the print encyclopedias/reference sources listed in your research guide. Find and read a relevant article of interest in one of them and provide a brief summary.

3. Use one of the online reference sources to find information on a point of style, grammar or usage in which you are interested.  Attach a printout of one page which addresses the point.  Be sure to give the title and URL for the source if it isn't listed on the printout.

 

 

4. Use the MLA Bibliography article database to find an article reference to a scholarly journal article on styleAttach a copy of the citation. 6. Use a different article database (not MLA), to find an article of interest. Print and attach the citation. List the name of he database used:______________________________________________.

 

7. Browse the current journals listed on the research guide. Find and read a scholarly journal article on English style, grammar or usage.  Provide the complete citation.

8. Explore the Web resources listed on the research guide. Select one of the sites listed, or find another relevant site and provide a description and evaluation of the site. Why is it useful? 9.  Using The American Heritage Book of English Usage (or The Oxford Dictionary of American Usage & Style) and The Oxford Dictionary of English Grammar   (or The Pocket Fowler's Modern English Usage)  find one point of style, grammar or usage where U.S. and British English differ.   List the point of style, grammar or usage you found.  Briefly discuss the differences.
