Finding Books

Using Catalogs: Use the WSU online catalog to find location and availability of books and other media in Stewart Library. Most of the books on Middle Eastern literarture and literary criticism are located on level two of the library in the General Collection under the call numbers PJ and PK. Books on Middle Eastern history are found under DS and books on Islam are found under the call number BP.

Keywords & subject headings: Use the term "criticism" or "interpretation" and the name of an author or title in the catalog to find books analyzing specific author's works.   For more general works, try:  literature and the name of a language:  Persian literature, Arabic, literature, Turkish literature, etc.   For women writers, add the term:  women

Electronic Books: 
  • The Country Studies - This series, published by Library of Congress,  presents a description and analysis of the historical setting and the social, economic, political, and national security systems and institutions of countries throughout the world and examines the interrelationships of those systems and the ways they are shaped by cultural factors. Not every country is represented and dates of publication vary. 
  • NetLibrary - A searchable collection of electronic books on all subjects.

From Bookstores: Order books online from Amazon Books, Barnes and Noble or Yahoo Books Page. Also use Books in Print sources as needed.

Interlibrary Loan: If we do not own a particular book or article you need, we will borrow it for you from another library through Interlibrary Loan.

  • Literature Resource Center (includes Contemporary Authors, Dictionary of Literary Biography and other materials) -  Literature Resource Center provides access to biographies, bibliographies and critical analysis of over 90,000 authors from every age and literary discipline. Search by Author Name, Title, Genre, Literary Movement or Literary Themes. A great place to start any literature research project or paper.
  • Biography Reference Bank - More than 46,000 full-text profiles of authors, artists, prizewinners, politicians, world leaders, musicians and more. Covers the Ancient World to the present.
  • CIA World Factbook
  • Department of State Background Notes: Middle East and North Africa

  • The Atlas of the Arab World - REF G1785.F3 1991
  • The Biographical Dictionary of the Middle East - REF DS62.4.B56 1991
  • Culturegrams - REF Table 9A GT150.C85. Handy summary of practical information for the traveler; touches on the social customs and the economic, political and historical characteristics of the country useful for the visitor to know. 
  • Dictionary of the Middle East - REF DS43.H57 1996
  • Encyclopedia of the Modern Middle East  - REF DS43.E53 1996
  • Encyclopedia of the Third World - REF HC59.7.K87. Provides a compact, balanced and objective description of the dominant political, economic, and social systems of 122 countries of the world. 
  • Encyclopedia of World Cultures - REF Table 9A GN307.E53 1991. Volumes cover 1,500 cultures from around the world. Each entry includes information on cultural relations, kinship, marriage and family, religion, and a bibliography. 
  • Encyclopedia of the Modern Middle East - REF DS43.E53 1996

FINDING BOOK REVIEWS:

For home or off campus access please use your WSU Login. There are several good sources for book reviews they include:

  • Literature Resource Center - includes reviews, search by title or author.
  • Book Review Digest - REF Table 2A - Reviews of fiction and nonfiction in magazines and journals. 1983-present. Updated monthly. Search by author or title to find review excerpts and references to reviews in other publications.
  • Academic Search Premier -  find reviews of fiction in magazines, articles and newspapers
  • Books in Print with Reviews - Some full text reviews. 
  • Amazon.com & Barnes & Noble - search for a book by author or title, scroll down to see both editorial reviews and review excerpts from major publications and customer reviews from interested readers.
  • The New York Times Book Reviews - available via the Literature Resource Center from 2001, Proquest Newsstand from 1999 and indexed from 1989 to the present in Academic Search Premier.  All issues available on microfilm:  AP2.N65  (include with the regular New York Times.)
  • The New York Review of Books - over 20 full text reviews and article from each issue are available online. Includes the complete table of contents for each issue and an excellent searchable archive.  Also available in the library on microfiche AP2.N535 - find articles via Academic Search Premier.

    All of the article databases below can also be used to find book reviews and critical articles.


Finding Articles

ARTICLE DATABASES

To find articles on your topic you need to use article databases, also known as periodical indexes. Each database usually covers a group of subject related journals. Search by subject or keyword in these indexes. Most indexes are available from off campus. 

  • MLA Bibliography - MLA International Bibliography is usually the best index for researching literature and literary criticism topics. MLA provides article reference for articles in literature, languages, linguistics, and folklore back to 1963. Updated ten times per year.
  • Arts & Humanities Search - Citations from many of the world's leading arts and humanities journals. 1980 - present, updates weekly. 
  • Academic Search Premier - Provides some full text articles in over a thousand magazines and journals  
  • Lexis/Nexis Academic - Full-text coverage of many newspapers from across the US and around the world.
  • Contemporary Women's Issues - Contemporary women's issues on health and human rights, selected full-text. 1992 - present, updates every two weeks. 
  • Ethnic NewsWatch - Full text. Articles from minority and ethnic newspapers, magazines, and journals. 1960-Present.
  • GenderWatch - Full text Newspaper, magazine, and journal articles addressing the impact of gender in society. 1990-Present (with selected articles from the 1970's and 1980's)
  • Social Science Databases (EbscoHost) - Cross-database searching for several databases, selected full text.

BROWSING CURRENT PERIODICALS

Current magazines and journals can be browsed in the Current Periodicals Area, on the Main level. Bound volumes of older issues are found upstairs in the periodicals stacks.
