Finding Books

USING CATALOGS

Use the WSU online catalog to find location and availability of plays, books and other media in Stewart Library. Many of the books on theatre are located on level two of the library in the General Collection under the call numbers PN 1600-3307 Literature, Drama and PN 2000-3307 Dramatic Representation, The Theater. 

Use WorldCat  to find books in other libraries. For home or off campus access please use your WSU Login.   Stewart Library Interlibrary Loan services will order for you.

Order books online from Amazon Books, Barnes and Noble. Also use Books in Print sources as needed (Off-campus access  is available with a WSU ID number.)

INTERLIBRARY LOAN

If we do not own a particular book or article you need, we will borrow it for you from another library through Interlibrary Loan.


Reference Resources and Reviews

Reference resources include encyclopedias, dictionaries and other materials you use to "refer" to. Use these resources for background information on a topic. Reference books, including theatrical dictionaries and encyclopedias are available on the middle level, in the Reference area shelves under the call number PN2035 and on Reference Table 3A.  For home or off campus access please use your WSU Login.

ONLINE REFERENCE RESOURCES

  • Literature Resource Center - The Literature Resource Center database includes Contemporary Authors, Dictionary of Literary Biography and other materials. It provides access to biographies, bibliographies and critical analysis of over 90,000 authors from every age and literary discipline. Search by Author Name, Title, Genre, Literary Movement or Literary Themes. A great place to start any literature research project or paper.
  • Literature Criticism Online - Find literary criticism and information on authors from several Gale resources. Includes:Children's Literature Review, Classical and Medieval Literature Criticism, Contemporary Literature Criticism, Literature Criticism 1400-1800, Nineteenth Century Literary Criticism, Shakespeare Criticism, Short Story Criticism, Twentieth Century Literary Criticism. Available from 2010 (Beginning dates vary).

  • New York Times Theater Reviews,1870-1970 Ref Table 3B - Full text of reviews that appeared in the New York Times. For reviews from 1980 to the present, see LexisNexis Academic below
  • Nineteenth Century Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature - Located in Special Collections, level 2. - Indexes reviews from 1890 to 1899, with supplementary coverage from 1900-1922. Approximately 51 periodicals are indexed with access under dramas-criticism, plots, etc., and by playwright's name. .

Finding Articles

 

 

ARTICLE DATABASES

To find articles on your topic you need to use article databases, also known as periodical indexes. Each database usually covers a group of subject related journals. Search by subject or keyword in these indexes.  For home or off campus access please use your WSU Login.

  • IIPA - International Index to the Performing Arts - Citations, abstracts and some full-text articles on all aspects of the performing arts including plays and playwrights.
  • MLA - MLA International Bibliography is usually the best index for researching literature and literary criticism topics. MLA provides article reference for articles in literature, languages, linguistics, and folklore back to 1963. Updated ten times per year.
  • JSTOR  - A group of full-text journals covering many topics including theatre, history and literature. Dates of coverage vary.
  • America: History and Life - Indexes scholarly literature on the history and culture of the United States and Canada. 1964-Present.
  • Art Full Text - Abstracts from 1994, selected full-text from 1997 covering: Art History, Crafts, Decorative Arts, Fashion Design, Folk Art, textiles, etc.
  • Arts & Humanities Search - Citations from many of the world's leading arts and humanities journals. 1980 - present, updates weekly. 
  • Electronic Journals - use to find full text articles if you already have a citation
  • LexisNexis Academic - Fulltext coverage of many news, legal, and business resources. Find articles on theatre topics and reviews of plays and shows in newspapers from around the world. Dates of coverage vary, many update daily. 
  • Academic Search Premier - covers basic literary and theater journals.
  • Masterplots - 12,000 entries covering world literature, ancient to modern day. Plot summaries, character profiles and author biographies. Available on CD-ROM.

NEWSPAPERS

  • Many other newspapers and broadcast news services are available on the Web and will include information about theatre.
