Theatre 1053, Introduction to Theatre for Majors

A Note on Spelling:  You will need to use both spellings (theatre, theater) or truncation (theat*) where available to find all possible information.  You may need to play around with spellings on non-English works & authors.


Finding Plays

Use the WSU online catalog to find location and availability of plays, books and media (VHS, CD, etc.) in Stewart Library.   This also finds books available electronically via Netlibrary.

  • Use General Keyword search to search by keywords in the title OR the author's last name & keywords from the title:
    • Laramie Project
    • mamet buffalo  (finds David Mamet's American Buffalo)
  • Use author alphabetical to find plays by an author (last name first)
    • shakespeare, w (finds all plays written by Shakespeare)
    • vogel, paula (finds all plays written by Paula Vogel
  • Use Title alphabetical to find plays by title (drop initial articles like:  the, a, an)
    • Lysistrata (finds all editions we own of Lysistrata)
    • kentucky cycle (finds all editions we own of The Kentucky Cycle.)

Use World Cat to find books in other libraries. For home or off campus access please use your WSU Login. Stewart Library Interlibrary Loan services will order for you.

Use the Play Index (print only:  REF table 3B) for plays in collections and magazines.

Finding Reviews

Use databases & print indexes to find reviews of plays.  Be aware of dates of coverage.  Many online databases go back only to the mid 1980s. For home or off campus access please use your WSU Login.

  • New York Times Theater Reviews,1870-1970 Ref Table 3B - Full text of reviews that appeared in the New York Times. For reviews from 1994 to the present, see LexisNexis Academic below.  For plays between 1970-1994, use the New York Times Index in print REF AI21.N45 and read the reviews on microfilm (lower level, AN1.N42)
  • IIPA (International Index to the Performing Arts - Citations, abstracts and some full-text articles on all aspects of the performing arts including plays and playwrights.  For reviews use the keyword search and type term reviews and keywords from title: for Anna in the Tropics type:  reviews and anna and tropics
  • Reader's Guide Retrospective - covers reviews in magazines from 1890-1982.  Use keyword:  reviews with author or title:  kushner and reviews  OR  angels america reviews
  • American Drama Criticism - Ref Z 1231.D7 P3 (up to 1970s)
  • Literature Resource Center - (Includes Contemporary Authors, Dictionary of Literary Biography and other materials) -  Literature Resource Center provides access to biographies, bibliographies, some reviews and critical analysis of over 90,000 authors from every age and literary discipline. Search by Author Name, Title, Genre, Literary Movement or Literary Themes. Contains timelines. A great place to start any theatre research project or paper.
  • CurtainUp - The Internet Theater Magazine of reviews, features, annotated listings

  • Theatre Reviews Limited - online guide to reviews of productions around the country.
  • Nineteenth Century Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature - Located in Special Collections, Top level. - Indexes reviews from 1890 to 1899, with supplementary coverage from 1900-1922. Approximately 51 periodicals are indexed with access under dramas-criticism, plots, etc., and by playwright's name. Most titles covered in Reader's Guide Retrospective
  • Opening Night on Broadway - Ref Table 3A
  • Also use all article databases listed below to find reviews of plays and performances

Finding Literary Criticism

Reference resources include encyclopedias, dictionaries and other materials you use to "refer" to. Use these resources for background information on a topic. Reference books, including theatrical dictionaries and encyclopedias are available on the library's middle level, in the Reference area shelves under the call number PN2035 and on Reference Table 3.  For home or off campus access please use your WSU Login.

  • MLA Bibliography -  search by play title or author.  The most comprehensive guide to articles, books and conference proceedings on literature of all nations.  no fulltext
  • Academic Search Premier - covers basic literary and theater journals.

Finding Production Information

You can find production information in many of the databases listed above, especially IIPA.  In many cases, the fastest way is to use reference resources.
