Finding BooksOnline Catalogs:Use library online catalogs to find availability and location of books and other media:
To find books on art and symbolism in differenct cultures, combine the name of the culture/ethnic group (ie. Hopi, Cuna, Maya, Chinese, etc.) or country (ie. China, Russia, Brazil, etc.) with one of the following search terms: anthropology, antiquities, archaeology, art, culture, customs, ethnography, ethnographic, ethnology, folklore, myth, myths, mythology, religion, ritual, symbols, symbolism, etc. Here are some sample search statements; note the use of truncation (*) to search for several variants of a word at the same time.
Browse the Shelves:When you locate a book, be sure to browse the shelves; there may be similar books nearby. Bibliographies:When you find a good book or article, check the bibliography to identify other books and articles on your subject. Interlibrary Loan:If we do not own a particular book you need, we will borrow it for you from another library through ILLIAD, our online Interlibrary Loan service. Finding ArticlesOnline Article Databases:Use Social and Behavioral Sciences article databases to find magazine and journal articles using the same search statements you used when searching the online catalog. Electronic Journals:The library also provides access to many electronic journals in Anthropology and related fields. All of these allow you to browse the table of contents of journal issues and many allow you to search all available issues by keyword. Bibliographies:When you find a good book or article, check the bibliography to identify other books and articles on your subject.
