Scope:  This guide is a selected list of resources that will be useful for locating investment information.  These resources include print materials available in the Stewart Library, and electronic resources, some of which may be available only to WSU students, faculty, and staff.   Table of Contents

General Investment Resources

  • Investopedia.com
    A searchable database of finance and investment terms. Categories include Acronyms, Buzz Words, Fundamental Analysis, Mutual Funds, New Economy, Options & Futures, Retirement Planning, Stock Trading, Taxes, Technical Analysis, Real Estate, and World Financial Markets. Each entry provides a definition of the term, supplemental information from the "Investing Guy", and a list of annotated links related to the terms. The "Investopedia University", located at the bottom of the page, contains tutorials and articles on various topics.

    Advice on investment strategy, personal finance, and retirement.  Good source of general information for beginning or intermediate-level investors.

    "IPT provides independent, objective information needed by consumers to make informed investment decisions."  Good source of non-commercial investor education materials.  Good starting point for investment newbies.
  • SBBI (Stocks, Bonds, Bills, and Inflation) yearbook  Reference HG4501.S7949
    Provides a comprehensive, historical view of the performance of capital markets dating back to 1926. Contains total returns and index values for large and small company stocks, long-term corporate bonds, long- and intermediate-term government bonds, and Treasury bills and inflation. 
  • Yahoo Finance Page
    A wealth of information on the market.  Includes stock and mutual fund screeners.

    Historical charts going back 10 years. 
  • Quicken Charts  
    Historical charts going back 5 years, as well as moving average charts. 
  • Microsoft Investor 
    Provides historical stock charts going back several years. Need to download special software available free of charge from site to access charts. 
  • Trendline Daily Action Stock Charts  HG4916.T732
    Weekly charting service that shows daily highs, lows, volume, closing prices plus latest earnings for NYSE and ASE stocks.  Most current edition at reference desk, others on Table 6, reference collection, and general collection.

HISTORICAL PRICE QUOTES

  • Historical Stock Quotes
    Select date range, then choose daily, monthly, weekly, or dividends display format.  Type in ticker symbol.  Includes open, high, low, close, volume, and adj. close.
  • SiliconInvestor.com
    Enter company name or ticker symbol, then choose "Hist. Prices" from the menu bar.   Includes opening, closing, high, low prices and volume. 
  • BigCharts
    Select "Historical Quotes" from the menu.  Includes closing price, open, high, low, volume, split-adjusted price, and adjustment factor.  Displays only one date at a time.
  • Dreyfus Brokerage Services, Inc.
    Select "Market Information", then "Get Quotes".  Select "Hist. Pricing", type in the stock symbol, and select number of days to display (current day up to one year- cannot choose a date range).  Includes closing, open, high, low, and volume.
  • Historical Data for S&P 500 Stocks  
    One year only.  Includes links to other historical sources.
  • NASDAQ
    Click on the stock charts to see the underlying data.

    A month by month calendar of stock splits.
