Scope:  This guide is a selected list of resources that will be useful for locating statistical information.  These resources include print materials available in the Stewart Library, and electronic resources, some of which may be available only to WSU students, faculty, and staff.

Good Starting Points

  • U.S. Census Bureau
    Provides links to both national and international statistics.  A good place to start, particularly for regional demographic and economic data. For U.S. geographic area data choose 'Geography' from the opening screen, then 'Map Stats'.  For all other topics choose Subjects A to Z which includes links to other government statistics sites.  Their International Data Base provides online socioeconomic data for many countries in such categories as population, vital statistics, literacy, labor force, employment, and income.    

  • Statistical Abstract of the United States
    Text of the Statistical Abstract of the US available in PDF format.  A good starting point for general statistics on almost any subject, this resource provides a digest of statistics from many sources. Check the sources listed at the end of the statistical tables for updated or more detailed data. 

  • State and Metropolitan Area Data Book
    From the U.S. Bureau of the Census.   A collection of statistics on social and economic conditions in the United States at the State and metropolitan area levels. 

  • American Fact Finder                                                                    
    Lots of Census data, including facts about population and housing, business and industry, community information, and maps.

  • StatUSA 
    A subscription service of the Economics and Statistics Administration of the U.S. Department of Commerce. State of the Nation contains data on the U.S. economy and finance including economic indicators, housing and construction, employment, manufacturing and industry, monetary statistics, and economic policy. The National Trade Data Bank (NTDB) has U.S. import and export statistics. The International Trade Library is searchable by country or product.  Some of the site requires a password.  (See librarian for password)

  • Economic Indicators
    (U.S. Congress)  Clean charts and tables of basic economic data. 

  • Bureau of Labor Statistics
    From the home page, click on Economy at a Glance for a monthly table of economic indicators. The indicator links lead you to news releases and summaries of the data. 

  • Economic Statistics Briefing Room
    The most current economic indicators with links to charts and press release tables. 

  • FRED: Federal Reserve Economic Data
    Historical U.S. economic and financial data, including daily U.S. interest rates, monetary and business indicators, exchange rates, balance of payments. 

  • LABSTAT
    (US Bureau of Labor Statistics)   Data on employment and wages. 

INTERNATIONAL ECONOMICS STATISTICS: 

  • Handbook of International Economic Statistics
    (U.S CIA Directorate of Intelligence)   Contains many economic tables comparing countries.   Includes information on economic trends, production, energy, agriculture, foreign trade and aid. Coverage from1970 to 1997.   Information from the tables is available in Excel format at the web site.

  • Human Development Report
    (United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).  Contains information and statistics on on human development indicators such as gender gaps, crime, energy use, poverty, and access to education. 

  • Monthly Bulletin of Statistics
    (United Nations. Statistical Office).  Provides monthly statistics on 60 subjects from over 200 countries and territories, together with special tables illustrating important economic developments. Quarterly data for significant world and regional aggregates are included regularly.

  • OECD Statistics
    Statistics for the 29 member countries. 

  • World Development Report
    The World Bank's annual World Development Report (WDR) provides a guide to the  economic, social and environmental state of the world today.  Each year the WDR provides in depth analysis of a specific aspect of development.  Past reports have considered such topics as the role of the state, transition economies, labor, infrastructure, health, the environment, and poverty. Contains selected economic indicators such as size of the economy, quality of life, poverty, environment, economy, balance of payments, power & transportation, states & markets, and global links. 

  • World Development Indicators
    Profiles cover 206 countries and 17 country groups reported on in the World Development Indicators book. You can also do a data query online at http://devdata.worldbank.org/data-query/ and download the data into Excel format. 

  • World Economic Outlook
    Published by the IMF.  Provides tables on inflation, foreign trade, financial policies, and more.

  • The World Economic Outlook (WEO) Database September 2000. 
    Includes  real gross domestic product (annual percent change), gross domestic product (values at market exchange rates and purchasing power parity exchange rates), inflation (annual percent change), world trade volume of goods and services (annual percent change), world exports of goods and services (billions of U.S. dollars), and world imports of goods and services (billions of U.S. dollars). 

  • International Statistical Agencies
    Links to statistical agencies of most countries of the world.
