Article Databases

To find articles on your topic you need to use article databases, also known as periodical indexes. Each database usually covers a group of subject related journals. Search by subject or keyword in these indexes.  Science databases may be found at http://library.weber.edu/articledatabases.

Article Databases Available for Microbiology

Article databases provide references, abstracts and sometimes the full article from journals, magazines, books and other published literature.  

Biological Abstracts

References and abstracts to research journals in all areas of the Life Sciences. 1996 to 2002.   Select publication years to search. To search 2003 on, please use BasicBiosis.

Environmental Sciences & Pollution Management   
Provides references and abstracts to publications on ecology, pollution, bacteriology, toxicology, risk assessment,  waste management, water resources, policies and regulations.   1982-present

Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition  
Over 500 scholarly full text journals covering the health and medical areas. Abstracts and references for over 500 additional journals.

GPO (Government Printing Office) Monthly Catalog    
Indexes governmental agency publications, including EPA and CDC reports.  1976 - present 

MEDLINE (EbscoHost)   
References and abstracts and some complete journal articles from all fields of medicine and biomedicine. 1966- present  Some full text articles.


Finding Books

Using Catalogs: 

Search the Stewart Library web catalog to find books, videos, and journals available in the Library.  Most of the books on Botany are located on level two of the library in the General Collection under the call numbers QK, SB.

Interlibrary Loan:

If we do not own a particular book or article you need, we will borrow it for you from another library through Interlibrary Loan .


Reference Resources

Reference resources include encyclopedias, dictionaries and other materials you use to "refer" to and can be found in the reference area of the library. Use these resources for background information on a topic.

Research Tips

  • Clearly identify your information need
  • Identify key words and search terms to match your topic
  • Develop search statements using advanced search techniques
    • Boolean logic, adjacency searching and truncation
  • Use the Stewart Library catalog to find books
  • Use the Science and Technology article databases to find journal articles
  • Go back to the online catalog to see if the journals are in Stewart Library and where they are located
  • Use interlibrary loan to get materials that are not in Stewart Library
  • Use search engines to find Web information
  • Carefully evaluate the information you find for usefulness and quality
  • Revise your search terms and strategy to expand or narrow your results, be creative, look in other areas
  • Once you have found information from an Internet site you can email the documents to yourself, 
    print or save them to a floppy disk  
  • Use appropriate style to document and cite research
