Level One

Common elements: Need little experience. On the job training. Basic high school level software and other skills.

 

Technical Services Assistant (1)

Materials shelf ready processing, labeling, counting, running, gathering, sorting, any other task that can be performed by student workers.

 

Circulation Services Assistant (5-8)

The Circulation Services Assistant provides easy access to library collections by shelving inventorying collections. They provide customer service in areas of giving directions and referrals, finding resources, and locating materials, retrieving items from open and closed stack areas, and delivering and picking up materials across campus. They update student records, record usage statistics, and serve patrons by checking in and out library items, pulling course reserve items, receiving money for services rendered, printing documents and sending faxes, giving directions and refeerrals, and scheduling campus deliveries and pickups. Assistants help with conference room setups and they perform opening and closing building procedures. This position completes FERPA training and PCI compliance training.

 


 

Level Two

Common elements: More specialized skills, experience and/or on the job training required. Responsible for an area with minimal supervision at times. 

 

Special Collections Oral History Assistant (1)

This position is responsible for the transcription of oral histories and the creation of the digital file. The position requires typing 50 wpm and knowledge of Microsoft Office. The position is responsible for the department’s oral history equipment and also serves as the recorder for oral histories.

 

Special Collections Office Assistant (1)

This position is responsible for the service desk of the department. The student is also the stacks manager for the department with the duties of reshelving, shifting, and pulling materials for patrons. This position is responsible for the opening and closing of the department if no staff member is available. This position is the main point of contact for all patrons to the department.

 

Special Collections Assistant (3)

This position is responsible for processing manuscript collections, patron scanning and staffing the service desk when needed. This position requires Microsoft office and scanning software experience. The students work independently on the processing of collections under the supervision of the Coordinator of Special Collections. They are also responsible for the department and patrons when staff members are not available.

 

Technical Services Equipment Assistant (1)

Processes shelf-ready circulating equipment, manages 3D print processing, details equipment problems for resolution, packages/brands new equipment for circulation.

 

Public Service Assistants (10-15)

Public Service Assistants are students who assist in staffing the library’s service desks on the first and second floor. The library’s Research and Tech Help Desk is the main point of contact for students, faculty, and staff who want help using the library’s resources or need basic technical support, while the Services Desk provides general information and circulation of materials for patrons. Assistants assigned to Circulation will provide basic circulation desk services, including general assistance with finding library resources. The Assistants assigned to the Research and Tech Help Desk provide hands-on experience using various library resources, including subject databases and programs such as LibraryH31p, the library’s chat & text program. In addition, they may help the Reference Coordinator with departmental projects and responsibilities.

 

Digital Collections Project Assistant (Digitization) (2)

The Digital Collections Project Assistant will work in a six-member team environment and be given the opportunity to develop skills and knowledge of current technology and best practices. This student should be interested in handling unique historical documents and/or working with imaging software and technology. This individual will be given the opportunity to work with a unique historical collection which will include: Scanning unique historical documents and images, running and proof-reading OCR transcription using ABBYY Fine Reader software, creating a Metadata file in Microsoft Excel using Dublin Core best practices, uploading the final product into our content management system, and creating an archive file for each step of the process. Other duties may include assisting in the photo lab imaging three-dimensional and over-sized items. This position will assist walk-in patrons with oversized scanning and printing and oversee the area when Digital Collections staff is out of the office.

 

University Archives Imaging Project Assistant (2)

The University Archives Imaging Project Assistant will work in a four-member team environment and be given the opportunity to develop skills and knowledge of current technology and best practices. The student should be interested in handling historical documents and/or working with imaging software. As the Archives Imaging Project Assistant, this individual will be given the opportunity to work with unique historical photographs, scanning and making them available for future researchers, creating metadata for object description, and providing a file on the server for future access. The student assistant will be included in the front desk rotation, providing reference and research services to Archives patrons and oversee the area when Archives staff is out of the office. The successful candidate will be self-motivated and willing to assist with other programs and activities taking place in the Archives.

 

University Archives Processing Assistant (1)

The University Archives Processing Assistant will help with the processing and basic preservation of materials related to the history of Weber State University. The student assistant will also assist the department by accurately creating and updating documents, spreadsheets, and databases related to the Archives’ holdings. The student assistant will be included in the front desk rotation, providing reference and research services to Archives patrons and oversee the area when Archives staff is out of the office. The successful candidate will be self-motivated and willing to assist with other programs and activities taking place in the Archives.

 

University Archives Processing Intern for the President Brady Collection (1)

The University Archives Processing Intern will preserve and increase access to historical documents of the Rodney H. Brady Collection by processing records, scrapbooks and photograph collections, creating finding aids, scanning materials, performing preservation tasks, and entering the processed collection into an online searchable database (ArchivesSpace).

 

Level II Digital Collections Student Assistant (Oral History) (1)

The Digital Collections Student Assistant will work in a six-member team environment. This position will focus on assisting with the processing of our Oral History collections. They will have the unique opportunity to transcribe oral histories, reformat them, and make them available online. This will include: transcribing the interview using express scribe software, creating a Metadata file in Microsoft Excel using Dublin Core Best Practices, uploading the final product into our content management system, and creating an archive file for each step of the process. This position will also track and monitor the ongoing progress of all oral histories being processed. Other duties may include scanning unique historical documents and images, as well as running and proof-reading OCR transcription of the documents. This position will assist walk-in patrons with oversized scanning and printing and oversee the area when Digital Collections staff is out of the office.

 


 

Level Three

Common elements: Specialized skills, experience, and training. Significant independence and responsiblity beyond occasional responsibility for an area. Peer teaching. Certification required.

 

Davis Campus Library Student Assistant (1)

Provide reference and circulation services to patrons of the Davis Campus Library. Close the library area on weeknights and open/close on Saturdays. Receive monies for services, record statistics, and have a good understanding of Stewart Library and Davis Campus Library services. This position would have the same responsibilities of a reference student and a circulation student with the added responsibility that they would be staffing the Davis Campus Library on their own. This position would need to complete FERPA training and PCI compliance training, and have Davis Library keys to facilitate opening and closing of the area.

 

Lead Public Services Assistant (3-4)

The Lead Public Services Assistant III provides assistance with weekend operations supervision and/or opening or closing at Stewart Library. The Lead Public Services Assistant also works at the Davis Library’s Service Desk during part of the work week. The Lead Public Services Assistant is responsible for all duties required of the Circulation Services Assistant positions including: shelving, providing information and check in/out services at the desk, inventory, shifting, recording statistics, certification, safety certification, reference help, and assistance with special projects as assigned. This position has the same responsibilities as a Circulation Assistant/Public Services Circulation Assistant, with the added responsibility that they may be providing backup supervision of Circulation on their own. In the absence of a staff supervisor, the Lead Public Services Assistant will direct and supervise Circulation Assistants and oversee opening and closing duties.

 

Peer Reference Consultants (2)

Peer Reference Consultants (PERCs), along with the duties of the Student Reference Assistants, will provide personalized research assistance to students in the library, online and First-Year Experience, ENGL 1010 and 2010, and other key courses. In the future, only students who receive certification for peer mentoring by the CRLA will qualify for this job. PERCs will also offer information literacy workshops, assist the Reference Coordinator with outreach, as well as train newly hired Student Reference Assistants. In addition, they will help the Reference Coordinator with departmental projects and responsibilities.

 


 

Pay Levels

Student assistant wage rates: Approved July 1, 2021

Based on actual months worked, not time since hire. Dependent on review that documents students are meeting expectations.
