SCUA Patron Registration Form

WSU Special Collections and University Archives (SCUA) is committed to both the access and preservation of our holdings. This means that while we are dedicated to providing our patrons with the best possible research experience, we must also have special rules to protect our materials. As you read and initial each rule below, please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

• SCUA materials do not circulate and are to be used in the reading room only.
• Personal belongings, such as briefcases, backpacks, laptop/tablet cases, purses, and outerwear, must be stored under your table or against the wall as you view materials.
• All personal effects are subject to inspection prior to and following patrons viewing the materials.
• No food, candy, gum, or beverages.
• Notes should be taken on laptops, tablets, phones, or paper. Only pencils are allowed for note taking. Staff can provide you with a pencil and paper if you do not have them.
• When working with our materials, only one box may be viewed at a time. Please help us maintain the order by only removing one folder from a box at a time. Materials must be kept in the same order that they are found. Please return materials to their proper enclosures.
• Exercise care in handling fragile items. Staff may require the use of white gloves to handle some items.
• Patrons may not mark, paper-clip, staple, fold, or put sticky notes on any materials. Do not remove staples or other fasteners.
• Photocopies and scans will be made by a SCUA staff member. Fees may apply, as well as copyright laws and other restrictions. Fragile or rare materials may be rejected for reproduction.
• Photography of materials with phones or tablets is typically allowed, but cannot be done without prior approval from staff.
• Patrons who plan to publish or exhibit SCUA materials must obtain written permission and provide proper credit.
• Materials will not be pulled 15 minutes prior to the department closing.
• You will be asked to show a valid picture ID each time you visit Special Collections.

Copyright Restrictions

The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use", that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve a violation of copyright law.

Reproductions are provided solely for the reference use of the applicant. In providing copies, the WSU Special Collections and University Archives does not thereby grant permission to reproduce further or quote extensively for publication. For permission to publish, please contact SCUA (scua@weber.edu, 801-626-6388 or 6540). The granting of permission to publish by SCUA or Weber State University does not absolve users of materials from securing permission from copyright owners and payment of such additional fees as the owners may require if Weber State University does not own copyright or if the materials are not in the public domain. Researchers assume all responsibility for questions of copyright and invasion of privacy that may arise from copying and from the use made of the reproduction.
